This is an exciting time in education. Over the next few years you will notice some changes to instruction and testing in our school that will directly impact your child. It is essential that you know about these changes and what resources are available to help you support your child. Illinois has adopted the Common Core Standards for learning. These new standards encourage open-ended thinking and critical problem solving. These are skills that are required in the 21st century workforce and are essential for student success.
Asking your child questions that encourage higher level thinking (such as “Why do you think the author wrote this story? How do you think this made the character feel?”) and requiring them to explain their thinking will prepare them for success with the new Common Core Standards.
